($135) Good saturated ruby-red. Sexy aromas of cassis, raspberry, tobacco leaf, cigar box and nutty oak (100% new). A step up in concentration and flesh from the appellation wines but not at all a blockbuster in the context of Oakville wine (this is 81% from To-Kalon fruit). Fat, mouthfilling and deep but quite closed today, with its serious tannic structure apparent. I picked up a very ripe note of almost honeyed tobacco as well as a floral high tone, a medicinal element and a leafy hint. This long and classy wine needs time to harmonize in the bottle and may ultimately merit a higher rating. These 2005s are carrying alcohol in the high 14s, noted winemaker Janssens, but the To-Kalon Vineyard generally produces fruit with pHs in the 3.6 range, which is on the low side for ripe cabernet from Napa Valley.

Sleek, elegant and polished. A refined yet rich and complex effort, with a mix of mint, currant, bay leaf, sage and dusty berry flavors. Firms up on the finish, where the tannins are firm yet supple and integrated.

This is a beautiful 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from Mondavi. The wine, a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, has a youthful, opaque bluish/purple color and a classic nose of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, licorice, and subtle, toasty French oak. Some chocolate also makes an appearance. Approachable, this full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and handsome Cabernet Sauvignon strikes me as one of the superb efforts the Mondavi Winery has produced, and should age effortlessly for another 20+ years. Given the bevy of $200+ Napa Cabernets these days, at $135.00, this is not a best buy, but it's certainly a compelling price point, given this stunner. Drink it over the next 20 years. P.S. Once again, the vintage's incredible freshness, vibrancy and precision are well displayed in this wine and, as I have indicated so many times in this horizontal, this is a striking characteristic in the manner the 2005s have evolved.

Initially tasted a little stewed, but opened up beautifully with air. No fruit bomb, the flavors tend to be more earthy with some cedar, tobacco, and mint. Elegant and smooth.

Similar notes as last time. Good, not great. I think this vintage has already hit its prime. The tannins were well integrated and the fruit tasted as if it was beginning to fade.

Wine Advocate # 180 Dec 2008 Robert Parker 90+ Drink: N/A $80-$140 (100) The dense ruby/purple-hued 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve's big, sweet nose reveals aromas of creme de cassis, licorice, cedar, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, restrained, and made in a distinctively Bordeaux style, it possesses admirable purity, texture, and length. It is delicate and poised as opposed to flamboyant, and should age easily for 15-18 years.

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.
