($110; a 90/10 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Saturated bright ruby color. Liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, raspberry and mocha; high-toned in a positive way. A sweet, powerful fruit bomb on the palate, with perfectly integrated acidity giving shape and grip to the dark berry and cherry flavors. Firm underlying minerality contributes to the wine's very fresh impression. Finishes with terrific aromatic persistence.

A gorgeous nose of creme de cassis, spring flowers, and sweet black cherries emerges from the full-bodied, opulent 2005 Claret. Revealing more concentration, sweeter tannins, and more nuances and complexity than the 2006, this elegant beauty can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

Wow! This wine blew me away. Drinking perfectly right now. Crack a bottle if you have one! Deep ruby color, dark fruit nose, jammy fruit and slight earthy taste. Great finish!

Winemaker Robert Foley began his winemaking career in 1977, working at Heitz Winery before becoming founding winemaker at Markham, where he developed the style of Merlot that helped make the variety a mega-trend in the 1980s. Following his success at Markham, Foley is perhaps best known for his tenure with Pride and Paloma. He still keeps a coterie of clients including School House, Switchback Ridge and Hourglass. He founded Robert Foley Vineyards in 1999 and was named Food & Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2007.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
