2005 Ramey Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93
($60) Green-tinged gold. Ripe orange, pear and honeydew on the nose, with iodine and anise adding complexity. Deep and creamy, offering concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors and bracing minerality. Becomes spicier on the long, vibrant finish. This is strikingly pure and persistent.Author: Josh RaynoldsIssue: May/June 2008Rating: 18
Aromas of wet stone and golden apple, with a whiff of smoke. On the earthy side, bracing and minerally, and with a focused palate of apple, pear, tropical fruit, caramel and a hint of honey. Slightly tart finish should soften with time. There's a lot lurking in the background, so cellar; for the impatient, decant. (LM)Author: Linda MurphyWine Advocate | Rating: 94

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
