($38) Deep ruby. Youthfully pungent blackberry and cassis aromas joined by an exotic floral quality. Very sweet and primary, with energetic dark berry flavors complicated by cracked pepper and graphite. Gains weight and richness with air, picking up firm tannins but maintaining sweetness.

Aromas of ripe cherry, cracked pepper and floral notes are trim and a bit leaner on the palate.

The 2005 Syrah Las Colinas reveals floral, blackberry, and peppery notes, medium to full body, and loads of meatiness in a pure, richly fruity style.

Selected from a distinctively cooler site more known for its Pinot Noir, this vintage from Radio Coteau starts out exceptionally strong, full of bacon fat, wilted flowers, cedar and pepper notes in the nose that are strikingly expressive. Well, it was a good start folks, as this bit of foreplay leaves us austere and short on the palate, simply begging for more generosity and wondering where the finish went. I don'tknow enough about this producer to say whether or not this will put on substantial weight in the future, but think there is enough material here to give it another go 'round in two years

Smoke and tar on the nose. Dark, dark color -- eggplant. Black cherry, slightly meaty. A lot of promise on the nose which, at least initially, does not follow through on the palate. Improves both aromatically and on the palate, but, while the nose is very pleasant, it just never really delivers. Cocoa notes and chocolate covered berries. Flavors toward the end seem slightly over-ripe. 14.6%

Radio Coteau works exclusively with small, cool-climate vineyard sites in western Sonoma County. Winegrower Eric Sussman's first vintage at the helm was 2001, after spending the years prior gaining experience with organic winegrowing in Washington and French winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Learning from the masters at the Chateaux Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1995 and Domaines Comte Armand and Jacques Prieur in 1996, Eric returned stateside with a strong commitment to producing wines with a true "sense of place." The winery crafts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, primarily from designated sites.
