($57) Deep violet. Strongly perfumed aromas of raspberry and baking spices, complicated by a sexy floral tone. Immediately appealing, with vibrant strawberry and raspberry flavors, energetic mineral notes and fine-grained, silky tannins. Very suave stuff, with deeper cherry and dark berry flavors developing with air. This is 100% syrah this vintage, sourced from seven different sites.

The 2005 Syrah Cuvee Christine, which is from the Sonoma side of Spring Mountain, exhibits a blackish/blue color and a gorgeous cool-climate Syrah nose of tapenade, creosote, charcoal, espresso, and ground pepper. With as much blackberry fruit as one would like, it is inky bluish purple in color, with sensational ripeness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and tremendous extract in a massive style. Nevertheless, the wine is harmonious and velvety-textured.

Seemed a little closed when first opened, but was amply rewarded 30 minutes later with gorgeous asphalt and charcoal scents and a mouthful of luscious blackberry flavors. The black/blue tinted wine continued to improve as the meal progressed with espresso and black pepper notes becoming more prominent. Still a young wine not yet at its peak. Glad I still have a few more in the cellar.

Smoke, olive and sweet black fruit on the nose. Cherry. Meaty tones. Upon opening, better poised and far less over the top than I had expected, but a thin, alcoholic, acidic mess on day two. Really fell horribly apart overnight.

Pax Mahle produced a wide selection of vineyard-designate Syrahs from Northern California under this label for many years before leaving to begin another project, Wind Gap. Under the Pax label, he utilized indigenous fermentations, minimal handling, unobtrusive use of French oak and bottling without filtering or fining. Great care was always taken in the vineyards to produce the best fruit possible by maintaining the vines on an individual basis and ensuring low yields. In addition to many Syrahs, Pax also produced several white wines including Roussanne, Viognier, and a white blend. In 2009, with the departure of Mahle, the brand was re-named Donelan Wines.
