There are 370 cases of the 2005 Syrah Castelli-Knight Ranch. No weakling at 15.7% alcohol, it comes across like a Rhone Valley Hermitage given its good acidity, structured, tannic, masculine mouthfeel, and enormous, rich, camphor-infused blackberry fruit. It requires 3-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades.

Color - Dark red with garnet edges, not inky black - but it did gain weight and seem to darken with airtime in the decanter. Nose - Tight at first and needed air to coax out after an hour or so the pepper aromas, blackberry fruit, crushed flowers: maybe lilac/purple flowers. Subtle leather and some meat notes emerged later after a few hours. Palate - That wonderful pepper again, refreshing blackberry and some blueberry, crushed rocks and minerality. Firm tannins and refreshing acidity clean the palate and leave behind a long minute plus finish of blackberry and spicy pepper notes. Very well made and a true tribute to the Rhone - just as the folks at Pax Wine Cellars try to do it.

quite enjoyable. I thought Pax's wine was over-riped but they have proven me wrong for the third time now. quite complex with nice acidity. good length.

Pax Mahle produced a wide selection of vineyard-designate Syrahs from Northern California under this label for many years before leaving to begin another project, Wind Gap. Under the Pax label, he utilized indigenous fermentations, minimal handling, unobtrusive use of French oak and bottling without filtering or fining. Great care was always taken in the vineyards to produce the best fruit possible by maintaining the vines on an individual basis and ensuring low yields. In addition to many Syrahs, Pax also produced several white wines including Roussanne, Viognier, and a white blend. In 2009, with the departure of Mahle, the brand was re-named Donelan Wines.
