($216) Inky purple. Spicy dark berry and violet aromas build and expand with air, picking up suave mineral and sassafras character. Fleshy dark berry preserve flavors are complemented by zesty graphite and succulent herbs, finishing with superb depth and sweetness. Great material here, and I'll bet that this will please drinkers not long after its release, unlike most wines from this vintage.

CS Sweet like black cherry pastry laced with cinnamon and nutmeg. Fruit like deep crimson velvet and texture to match. Softness disguises a terrific weight and density of fruit. Sweet peppery finish. (JH)

The best bottle I've ever had, the 2005 Hermitage la Chapelle showed much more density and concentration than I recall. Peppery herbs, currants, dried blood and licorice flow beautifully to a medium to full-bodied wine that has lots of tannin, but solid mid-palate depth as well. It has a touch of the savory rusticity found in the 2006, but was still impressive on this occasion. It's worth noting that both the 2004 and 2005 were blended by Caroline Frey.

Very juicy, with nice drive to the black currant and boysenberry fruit, which is pushed by dark plum sauce, black licorice and sweet toast notes. The long, fleshy finish shows the polished grip of the vintage. 400 cases imported.

  • The Maison Paul Jaboulet Aine has seen a change of hands over the past decade, but the history goes back to a single winemaking family. As the Rhone region gained in popularity through the 1900s, the Frey family began courting the estate. The Freys had made their name in Champagne and as the owners of Bordeaux's Chateau La Lagune; they wanted to revamp the Jaboulet estate as they had done for estates in other French appellations.

Under the direction of Caroline Frey, they have succeeded, using strictly biodynamic techniques to produce the finest wines. The excellence of Paul Jaboulet Elder wines based on fruits high quality, enhanced by the careful vinification and aging of great finesse. For the finest appellations of the Rhone Valley, it is in the purest expression of terroir wines are born, their balance, complexity, longevity.
