($42; 80% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot and 6% cabernet franc; from the Saint Isidore and Seven Hills vineyards) Good full red. Initially reticent but pure nose opens with air to reveal cherry, redcurrant, plum and tobacco, all lifted by a whiff of rose petal. Juicy, sweet and fine-grained, with lovely clarity of flavor. This suave, seamless blend carries nicely on the back end, finishing with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and very good breadth.

Dense and chewy, with grippy tannins around a generous core of red pepper-scented cherry and spice flavors. Needs time to soften. 1,428 cases made.

A very nice wine, particularly for the price. Nice flavors and mouth feel, good nose and smooth tannins.

Translucent dark ruby red color. Big nose of smokey oak and currant. Dominating flavors but sort-of a middleweight feel compared to a Napa Cabernet. As the wine opened up, some nutty and coffee flavors came out. My style of wine is a little kinder and gentler, but if you're into big Cabs with a touch of finesse, this would be a good one to try.

Owen Roe, named after a 17th century Irish patriot who dedicated his life to political equality and freedom, is owned and run by Jerry Owen and David O'Reilly (winemaker). Their aim is to source only the very best fruit from top sites in Oregon and Washington, handle it gently in the winery, and produce wines of superior balance and quality. O'Reilly is meticulous in his attention to detail from the vineyard to the bottle, and his hard work and dedication show through in the final products.

In a state most often associated with rain and apples, vineyards occupy more land each year. Nearly all of this vineyard expansion has taken place in the eastern part of the state, where arid, almost desert-like conditions prevail. Winters are harsh and frost is always a threat, but such conditions, along with sandy soils, have allowed most Washington vines to grow on their own rootstocks—a rarity among wine regions throughout the world.
