($62) Deep ruby. A deep, youthfully brooding bouquet offers dark cherry, blackcurrant, incense and suave oak spices. Spicy cherry and dark berry flavors show an exotic anise quality and slow-building sweetness. This gently tannic, chewy, extremely persistent wine finishes with echoes of oak spice and floral pastille, not to mention excellent vivacity.

Espresso and allspice flavors show oak, but there's plenty of ripe black fruit on the palate. The plush texture is supported by ripe, muscular tannins, and licorice, mineral and graphite notes add complexity.

The 2005 Numanthia was aged for 19 months in new French oak. Opaque purple, it has a superb perfume of violets, mineral, wood smoke, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a firm, very structured wine with questionable balance. The finish is long but tannic. This is a wine that demands cellaring but purchasing it is a gamble.

Frankly, I was somewhat disappointed from this highly rated wine. Decanted for about 3 hours, but the wine was still pretty closed. I guess this one needs much more time in the cellar. The main reason for my disappointment though was that the wine was completely over-oxydiced on the second day. Lot's of Sherry on the nose. Overall I still give this a high rating because even though it was closed on the first day, it still tasted much better than most other wines in that price range. And it seems to have a lot of potential when given time. After all, Parker can't be wrong. Right? Will revisit in a couple of years.

Saved this for our bacon cheeseburgers and indeed it was a home run. Lots of dark fruits, currants - we didn't decant which would have helped but this was all kinds of awesome, impeccably structured. I always get a little blueberry and mocha with this, but I think either more air and or some more time would definitely have done this well. These wines tend to be leathery, tobacco-ish also, and just great with savory, fatty meats but one thing these wines have always been is elegant, never flabby to me.
