Not surprisingly given the very backward stage of the Chambertin, this offers significantly more aromatic breadth with its spicy dark fruit and almost invisible wood that introduces big, rich and serious flavors that are classy, refined and pure with superb power and length. I very much like the sense of harmony and overall balance and this too will require at least a decade of cellar time and probably more.

The Potel 2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze thus had a very hard act to follow, but its rose petal, licorice, orange zest, black raspberry and cassis perfume are captivating. Less lush and sumptuous than the Chambertin (and, incidentally, significantly lighter in color) this Clos de Beze makes its mark in refinement and dynamic, with a dazzling interplay of floral, spice, mineral and fruit throughout, and with any carnal elements entirely sublimated. The finish here floats with effortless allure across the palate and one's memory. The reputation of the appellation suggests long-keeping, but it will be hard to keep one's hands from the corkscrew. While there are four barrels of Chambertin, there is only one of Clos de Beze.

  • Nicolas Potel founded La Societe Nicolas Potel in 1997 after the sale of Pousse d'Or, which had been run by his father, Gerard Potel, since 1964. Though he has no vineyards of his own, Nicolas has been able to source grapes from some of the most prestigious vineyards in the Cote d'Or and by 2002 had 120 cuvees in production from 50 appellations. His fruit sources meet strict requirements including prime vineyard sites, a minimum of 35-year-old vines, and organic or even bio-dymanic farming. Potel makes wines that are richer and fuller than the more traditional style Burgundy.
