Black licorice and blackberry aromas, with hints of mineral, lead to a full-bodied palate. Very chewy, with loads of tannins, yet this follows through with beautifully ripe fruit, mineral and mint. Fascinating. Best after 2012. 25,555 cases made.

Blackish crimson. Slightly simple 'modern' nose. Very ripe - and really rather soft for a St-EstŠphe. Tarry finish. A little lack of freshness. Average group score was just 15.43. I may have over-estimated this en primeur but surely it should perform better than this? And definitely better than Dame de Montrose!

The Chateau Montrose 2005 has a quite brilliant bouquet with intense blackberry, cedar and tobacco scents that unfold in compelling fashion - but don't give too much away. The palate is full-bodied, a Montrose of |architecture| thanks to its vaulted tannin, perfect acidity and immense precision on the long finish. Everything here feel natural and effortless and yet it is clearly a 50+ year old wine. This is a fabulous Montrose, one built like a Bentley.

This continues to be very tight yet I loved drinking it the other night at dinner. Loads of spices, berries, meat, cloves and chocolate on the nose. Full body with soft, silky tannins and lots of rich fruit. Still chewy. This is just starting to open up now. Drink or hold.

Located in the heart of the Saint-Estephe appellation, Second Growth classified Chateau Montrose has been in the hands of the Charmoule family for over 100 years. The family has continued to follow age-old winemaking traditions of the Medoc with spectacular results. The vineyards also benefit from the mild microclimate created by the nearby Gironde estuary, which helps temper the climate, ensuring the grapes ripen under ideal conditions. Considered one of the top Saint-Estephe producers, Chateau Montrose is prized for its classic Claret style wines, big fruit and full structure. The wines are also known for their incredibly tannic nature, allowing them to stand up to years of aging. Chateau Montrose makes a second wine called La Dame de Montrose.

Located in the southwest of France, Bordeaux is the single largest fine-wine-producing region in the world, with more than 15,000 growers spread over 57 appellations and more than 700 million bottles produced annually. The region boasts a two-thousand-year winemaking history and some of the wine world's most recognized and highly sought-after names. Red Bordeaux blends comprise eighty percent of production, but dry and sweet whites are also well-known. The region is divided into the Left and Right Banks (of the Dordogne River); Cabernet Sauvignon prevails in the former and Merlot in the latter.
