    ($200) Good deep red-ruby. Musky dark berries dominate the nose. Dense and sappy but a bit youthfully compact despite its seamless texture. The musky dark fruit flavors are complicated by smoked meat and dried flowers. Very soil-inflected wine, but it appears to be in the process of shutting down in the bottle.

    Ample wood spice frames red pinot fruit and warm earth aromas where the earth component can also be found on the rich, fleshy and generous full-bodied flavors that are textured, concentrated and culminate in a mocha and plum infused finish. This is certainly a |statement| wine with a flair for the dramatic as it possesses plenty of personality but I marginally prefer the detail and delineation of the Cazetiers.

    Michael Magnien wines offer the Burgundy enthusiast a great opportunity to experience the refined extraction and elegant concentration of Pinot Noir. Michel comes from a long line of Burgundy artisans and owns 27 acres of grand cru, premier cru and village vineyards. He sold off the majority of his crop until 1992, when he started bottling most of the harvest. In 1994, at the urging of his son Frederic, he decided to bottle the whole harvest and thus it remains to this day. He is a leader in terroir-driven Pinot and deals in purity. His wines are sleek yet commanding, and flood the senses with waves of berry and cherry in a sea of perfumed and exotic spices.
