($84) Good pale color, like all of these 2005s. Reticent but perfumed nose offers subtle orange and stone notes. Juicy, pure and fine, with lovely grip and clarity to its flavors of lime, white flowers and stone. A very youthful, aromatically complex wine with terrific vivacity for the year. But not at all an easy style, and in need of aging. In both '05 and '06, these vines produced between 35 and 40 hectoliters per hectare, noted Latour. I can't recall a more promising young wine from this estate.

I was knocked out by the combination of airy, pure and elegant spicy white flower and citrus aromas that are at once seductive and classy and this refinement continues onto the precise, vibrant and minerally medium weight flavors that are both powerful and driving on the explosive and wonderfully long finish. This doesn't have the very best material in the range but this is one of those 'wow' wines as the harmony of expression is simply beautiful.

  • This estate, located on the Route Nationale in the village of Meursault, should be the poster-child for superb, terroir-specific white wine. The domaine's holdings in premier cru and villages vineyards is impressive, as is their ownership of the largest parcel of 1er cru "Genevrieres," one-third of which is over 50 years old. When Jean-Pierre Latour arrived as winemaker in the 1990s, he launched a revolution of upgrades that promoted progressive technology (new pneumatic presses, crusher-de-stemmers and temperature-controlled tanks), sustainable agriculture and a new barrel program. He only uses free-run juice and natural yeasts. Though mildly fined, the wines are not filtered and thus the integrity of the terroir's true expression is beautifully maintained. The happy consequence is an ever-increasing quality.
