($55-$65) Good red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of musky currant , black raspberry, camphor and tobacco leaf. Round and plump for St. Estephe, with noteworthy volume and seamless texture; sweeter by far than the chateau's 2007 or 2006 samples but possesses harmonious framing acidity. Finishes with broad tannins that arrive late. A big success.

At present, this structured, backward 2005 is dominated by the vintage's substantial tannins. It exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, a reticent but promising bouquet of sweet black fruits intermixed with weedy tobacco, licorice, and leather characteristics. Medium-bodied and powerful, with excruciating tannin, but promising potential, patience is most definitely required.

Dark with a little evolution. Medium intensity nose. Firm and very sweet and rich on the front for a St-EstŠphe. Is this the vintage? Very gorgeous and intense. Dry but not drying tannins on the finish. Long.

Has notes of blackberry, with Indian spices and green tea. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, a silky texture and a medium finish. Balanced and very refined. A beautiful young wine.

A bit early, but good potential (acidity and tannins still very present). Very pleasant notes of black fruit (plum, cherry) and sweet finish.

Gamey, with earth and spice, but super smooth on the palate. Amazing for this price point.

On a drive though the sprawling vineyard land of the northern Medoc, Chateau Lafon-Rochet is a luminous yellow beacon on the St. Estephe horizon. Situated bordering Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Chateau Cos D'Estournel, Lafon-Rochet can trace its glowing yellow roots back to Guy Tesseron, who purchased the 4th Growth-classified property in 1959. Under Tesseron, the grand, Chartreuse-style Chateau was built as part of a reinvestment project, which also included widespread replanting. The Tesseron family still owns Lafon-Rochet and is credited with upgrading its quality much in the same way they have propelled their other property, Chateau Pontet-Canet, to prominence.
