($45; a blend of 51% syrah, 44% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot) Dark purple. Dark cherry and licorice on the nose, with subtle spice and underbrush qualities adding interest. Lush, creamy dark berry flavors possess display impressive weight but also good energy and focus, with slow-mounting tannins adding shape. Finishes with impressive sweet persistence and a gentle tannic bite. Owner/winemaker Stephan Asseo likes the touch of austerity that petit verdot adds to the blend.

Intense, chewy and grainy in texture. The flavors are built around bay leaf and herb spices. It's focused and balanced, offering a minerally-pebbly edge. Decant for now. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

The least expensive red wine is the Optimus cuvee. The 2005 Optimus (51% Syrah, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot) barely qualifies as a Rhone Ranger, but it offers classic chocolate, cassis, espresso, and subtle wood notes along with a dense ruby/purple hue, gorgeous concentration, and plenty of spice, cedar, and a Pauillac-like complexity and richness. This serious effort is more French than Californian. It should drink well for 6-10 years.

over ripe...too much...then strong tannins. This isn't drinking good. Not sure of the storage handling was the problem since I bought it just 2 months ago.

The aroma of this dense, dark red blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot is reminiscent of spicy Bordeaux, with cigar box spice and tobacco, but with a big blackberry component from the Syrah. On the palate, beautifully structured tannins add weight and depth to black cherry and blackberry fruit at the peak of ripeness. Well worth the wait of holding the wine in the cellar for a few years, this is a seriously tasty Rhone/Bordeaux hybrid from a dedicated winemaker in Paso Robles.

This isn't a very memorable wine. It was a bit disapointing to be honest. The minerality totally overshadowed the berry flavours. Won't buy this again given the $40 price point.

Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.

After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
