($40; 59% syrah, 23% grenache, 8% carignan and 5% each petit verdot and alicante) Bright ruby. Musky aromas of black fruits, dark chocolate and licorice. Spicy and exotic, with the brisk acidity of the vintage giving life and energy to the seamless palate. This, too, seems denser than the 2004 example I tasted last year.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2007Wine Spectator | Rating: 88
Firm, tight and intense, with mineral and wild berry flavors that are in need of time in the bottle. While the tannins are tight, the flavors are complex. Syrah, Grenache, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. 4,000 cases made.Author: James LaubeWine Advocate | Rating: 90
Phelps is one of the first of California's wineries to experiment and develop a program for Rhone Valley varietals. They have moved the entire operation to their vineyards in Monterey County, and the 2005 Le Mistral is one of the best they have made over recent years. A blend of 59% Syrah and 23% Grenache, and the rest Carignan, Petit Syrah, and Alicante, it is a beauty. A delicious bistro and brasserie wine with loads of peppery black cherry and black currant fruit, the wine is expressive, soulful, and just delicious. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.Author: Robert Parker

Lovely - balanced, nice fruit, very smooth - it's all there in a great Rhone style blend - drinking exceptionally well right nowAuthor: Kip SSelf | Rating: 93
May have been the wine of the afternoon - just gorgeous opening flavors of vanilla, black currant and sweet cherries, that just coated the mouth and got better. Syrah provided the pie like flavors with the grenache providing the depth. Delicious with the flavors and power to stand up to lamb and the other rich Greek food. Big big explosive opening with an elegrant dry finish. Wine tasted really well integrated and still had tannins to spare.Drink Dates: 2007-2012Author: RossbossSelf | Rating:

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
