A beauty, the dark ruby-colored, beefy 2005 Pinot Noir has notes of animal blood and roasted meats and shows good sweetness and tannin, medium to full body, and excellent acidity and length. This is a solidly built, borderline-rustic Pinot Noir with loads of character and depth. It should drink nicely for up to a decade.

A very ripe yet sexy nose features deeply pitched raspberry, blue berry and hints of cassis that blend into rich, round and very suave flavors that possess ample density and real concentration and the nicely long finish really coats the mouth as there is considerable dry extract here. The only nit is that this is so rich that it lacks the detail and |relief| that this wine usually has. Some will undoubtedly love it and I can understand why as it really does offer much to like but great pinot also has an element of finesse and this, while a very generous effort, lacks that last element to be really great.

Fresh, snappy black cherry, raspberry, mineral and pebble notes gain richness and body, unlocking subtle flavor nuances. Ends with a tight, tannic finish. 960 cases made.

  • David Hirsch is a pioneer of pinot growing on the rugged Sonoma Coast. He planted his Old Vineyard on an ocean vista ridge-top in 1980 and sold his premium pinot and chardonnay in the decades that followed, building a reputation of excellence. Focus has always been site-specific, with wines made to highlight the uniqueness of the Sonoma Coast. In 2002 David and his wife Marie began their own winery in order to explore for themselves the possibilities of their Wine Spectator-dubbed a grand cru site, which had grown considerably from the original plantings. The production of their Estate wines is now beginning to expand, but remains limited. They also make a second wine called Bohan-Dillon, named for their road.
