Very subtle wood frames elegant and beautifully spicy dark berry fruit aromas with game, iron and hints of underbrush that blend into fresh, sweet and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract on the mouth coating and driving finish. This is balanced, textured and possesses another dimension of depth and power. Terrific.

Domaine Heresztyn Print 2005 barrel Clos St. Denis Grand Cru Red Note: from a .28 ha parcel of 25 year old vines - the first vintage was 1979 Producer note: The always understated, and given to understatement, Stanislaus Heresztyn calls 2005 a |solid if not truly great vintage. We had relatively normal yields with sugars in the 12.5 to 12.8% range and the grapes were clean, concentrated and deeply colored. The vinifications were easy though with such ripe tannins and phenolics, I pushed the extraction a bit more than usual and also used a bit more new wood than usual though still not much as I don't like oaky wines. Overall, I quite like the vintage as it gave very expressive wines that are balanced and the fruit is wonderfully clean and bright. Indeed, the malos were very long yet the wines did not shut down the way they often do when the malos take forever to finish.| I believe that Heresztyn was indeed understating his real impressions of the quality as I have never seen a vintage this good in the 12 years that I have been visiting this domaine. I was also impressed, generally speaking, with the quality of the '04s at this address, in particular the Les Millandes. In other developments, Heresztyn also told me that he purchased a parcel of the Chambolle 1er Les Borniques and the first vintage will be in 2006.
