($15; based on 55% syrah) Deep red. Intensely perfumed bouquet of dark berries, kirsch, smoked meat, violet and graphite; really showing off the syrah today. Round and sweet, with fleshy cherry, black raspberry and candied flower flavors framed by silky tannins. A deeper cocoa quality joins the dark berries on the finish. This superb Cotes du Rhone is a benchmark for the category.

A blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache, the 2005 Cotes du Rhone is a real head turner. Full-bodied, with a deep ruby/purple color and sweet notes of berry fruit, a hint of road tar, and some pepper, the wine is dense, chewy, ripe, and a surprisingly big mouthful of juicy, velvety-textured wine to drink over the next 3-4 years.

This has nice weight, with fleshy dark plum, raspberry and licorice notes. Shows some toasty grip on the finish, but stays juicy enough. Better than previously reviewed.

Drank this over two nights. First night decanted for about two hours, displayed nice dark fruit bouquet. Wine was tight so I put it back in the bottle. On second night it opened up with decent fruit but had some grippy tannins that kept it from really shining. Still, excellent QPR.

Ruby red. Compact, spicy nose. Sweet ripe tannins with rich, warming plummy fruits, black pepper spice and bitter chocolate on the finish.

Unfortunately, this was the third bottle of the night and I failed to take notes. I will say that this was a delicious wine with wonderful structure. We did not finish the bottle that evening and it tasted very nice the next evening. For the price, this is a fine bottle.

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
