($225) Bright, saturated ruby-red. Deep aromas of black fruits, violet, tobacco, licorice, minerals, nuts and earth. Lush, rich and sweet, with an intriguing smoky character and lovely lightness for a wine with so much breadth and volume. Unusually powerful and deep for this bottling; complex and distinctive. In a rather Old World style, with complex soil tones currently dominating primary fruitiness. Finishes broad and dry, with very lush, fine tannins. A superb vintage for this estate. Winemaker Brookman noted that this was a large crop but the team made three separate passes through the vines to reduce the crop level and then harvested later than ever here. The Grace wine was once aged in all new barrels but as of 2005 that percentage has been cut to 80% to 85%.

This is dark-colored, dense and chewy, with a meaty, beefy edge to the dried currant and savory herb flavors. Takes time to unwind, but has the depth and concentration to reward short-term cellaring.

In 1976, former stockbroker Dick Grace, along with his wife Ann and their children began growing Cabernet Sauvignon from their eponymous vineyard in St. Helena initially just as a hobby. With their first harvest sold to Caymus and subsequently bottled as one of the first single vineyard designated wines in Napa, they embarked upon the path to becoming one of America's wine legends. Besides maintaining the high reputation of their own vineyard and wines, the Graces have contributed to the development of many others, formerly employing Heidi Barrett, and providing budwood for Hartwell Estate, Vineyard 29, and Blank Family Vineyards. With limited production of and unrelenting demand for their wines, they also pioneered the mailing list/waiting list sales model prevalent among many cult cab producers today.
