  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($110) Good deep red. Vibrant aromas of dark fruits and smoked meat. Chewy, sweet and strong, communicating a distinctly wild character but also considerable subtlety and sap. Not yet showing its complexity, but this wine's ripe, harmonious tannins and impressively sweet finishing flavors promise a slow and positive evolution in bottle. Roumier describes this as a |more emotional wine,| saying that it gives him goosebumps.

  • Burghound | Rating: 92

A somewhat riper and highly expressive nose that is even more elegant puts on a display of complex aromas of red and black pinot fruit nuanced by distinct floral notes, especially violets, that precede the rich and intensely mineral-inflected medium full flavors carrying a wonderful sense of underlying tension that focuses the precise and explosive finish. A terrific wine that will age for years and highly recommended.

The 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras smells of ripe blackberry, raspberry, forest floor and chalk dust. A polished, creamy, yet palpably chalky and brightly fresh-fruited palate offers a sumptuous saturation of black and red fruits with inner-mouth aromatic accents of cherry pit, pistachio, flowers and citrus zest. This shows wonderful primary fruit intensity and energy, exciting length, and the promise of continued poise and polish for at least another 10-12 years.

This has fine density, but there's also a supple, silky appeal. Combine that with saturated flavors of black currant, bilberry, violet and mineral and you have a harmonious, alluring Burgundy. Everything is in the right place in this elegantly detailed red.

Very pure expressive fruit. Again, super-friendly (perhaps this is a natural reaction after tasting de Vog's reticent examples and Mugnier's slightly austere ones).

  • Georges Roumier married his way into some of the best vineyard holdings in the Cote d'Or, back in 1924. He gained a wife from Chambolle and the vineyards as part of the dowry. Grand Cru blocks in Bonnes-Mares, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, and Corton Charlemagne produce highly sought-after wines year after year. Christophe Roumier, Georges' son, has run the domaine since 1982, when he took over management of his family's 14.2 hectares of vines. He is regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the Cote de Nuit, one who strives to create authentic representations of each of his diverse plots.
