    ($70; these vines are now 103 years old, notes Emilie Geantet) Full ruby-red. Very pure, vibrant aromas of musky minerals, crushed stone and flowers. Densely packed but a bit imploded today, with superb intensity and precision to its red berry and mineral flavors. With its sound balancing acids, this is all spine at the moment, but the back end is dry, sophisticated and very long, leaving behind a sappy, tactile impression of extract. I'd wait six or seven years on this one.

    Background notes of wood spice frame the intensely earthy and rather animale nose of mostly red berry fruit aromas that combine with powerful and exceptionally ripe and rich flavors that explode on the mouth coating and hugely long finish. This is not an elegant wine but the sheer depth of extract is incredibly impressive as is the superb phenolic ripeness and there is a velvety natural sweetness that completely buffers the considerable tannic spine. One to buy.

    From parcels below the Champeaux, Geantet's 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs evinces cranberry, raspberry, licorice and vanilla in the nose. Displaying real depth and grip on the palate, it suggests subtle caramelization of fruit and marrowy low tones, with a creamy texture emerging. Firm but fine tannin does not detract from the exuberance of fresh fruit in the finish even as rich, savory meatiness and hints of caramelized fruit persist as well.

    Pungent, with an underlying earthiness adding depth to the black cherry, plum, chocolate and spice notes. A suave, modern style that's approachable now, but has the structure to develop.

    Really rather gorgeous on the nose. Ethereal lift with lots of seamless fruit and ripeness underneath. Very flattering. Should be a please-all but maybe purists would be worried by how forward it is. Not underoaked.
