($38) Dark red. Red and dark berry aromas are enlivened by cinnamon, nutmeg and more exotic Asian spices, as well as a strong hit of fresh rose. Tangy red berry flavors gain depth with air, picking up a suave mineral tone. The focused, bright finish displays an impressive mix of freshness and power.

A pretty and relatively high-toned nose of red berry fruit, including hints of orange peel and cranberry, leads to pure, sweet and nicely detailed flavors that possess good concentration and fine overall balance save for just a hint of finishing warmth. That nit aside, this is really quite nice.

Complex, with earthy strawberry, herb and sage notes that turn dry and earthier, with a cedary wood component that may soften with time. 858 cases made.

Ken and Akiko Freeman's search for the perfect Sonoma Coast vineyard site lead them to form a winery based on partnerships with top notch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growers in both the Russian River and Sonoma Coast appellations. Winemaker Ed Kurtzman, who previously developed the formidable Pinot program at Testarossa, lends his expertise in the production of vineyard-designate and appellation wines. From their initial vintage in 2002, the Freemans have increased production from 500 to over 5,000 cases of small lot bottlings.
