($42) Bright, deep red. Subtly complex aromas of bitter cherry, sandalwood, dried rose, spices and pepper. Juicy but not particularly fleshy, in the style of the year. A lively, very fresh style, a bit lean for this bottling but an ideal restaurant pinot. This gained in richness as it opened in the glass.

A relatively high-toned crushed red berry and briar fruit nose merges into intense, dusty and slightly mineral-infused flavors that are rich, focused and balanced while culminating in a sappy and mouth coating finish. This is still youthfully awkward but promising and I like the fine sense of depth here.

Austere, with firm tannins, ample oak and spicy tannins wrapped around a mix of cola, cherry and herb. Ends with scratchy tannins.

The 2005 Pinot Noir offers notions of red apple skins, pomegranates, currants, and roasted herbs. Although not complex, it is medium-bodied with good fruit, and 5-6 years of drinkability. More nuances may emerge over the next few years.

Etude was established in 1982 by wine consultant Tony Soter to produce high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir sourced from top growers. The brand embarked on an estate-focused philosophy in 1999 with the purchase of a former pasture at the base of Sonoma Mountain. The sustainably-produced wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and five estate-grown Pinot Noirs. Additionally, their appellation-focused Cabernet Sauvignon program offers selections from St. Helena, Oakville and Rutherford, as well as a Napa Valley bottling. Winemaker is Jon Priest.
