($525) Full red-ruby. Knockout nose melds raspberry, flint, mocha and coffee; distinctly rocky. Big, rich and sweet, with very ripe red berry liqueur flavors framed by an edge of tannins and acids. Like the Echezeaux, this also shows some lower-toned earth and underbrush elements, but this one also has the ineffable mineral lift I crave. Almost too seductive now: will it shut down in the bottle?

Deep ruby. This is a further step up in elegance, purity and transparency with cool and reserved black fruit, earth and subtle mineral notes that lead to more minerality on the precise, sweet, vibrant and harmonious flavors that are sleekly muscled on the powerful, long and classy finish. This is a dazzling effort and very |Cros| in style as it remains almost aloof in the fashion of a smaller-scaled Richebourg. A great wine and worth a special search to find but note that patience will be required.

Rouget's 2005 Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux displays much brighter, diverse red and black fruit aromas than does his Echezeaux, along with high-toned fruit distillate and citrus rind suggestions and scintillating spiciness (although a certain caramel, vanilla and resin overlay of oak is present as well). This delivers bright, energetic, sappy fruit intensity and generous spiciness on the palate, leading to an ejaculatory finish, at once pointed and clinging in its concentration. Plan on saving this (and yourself) for another 8-10 years.

  • Following closely in the footsteps of his now-retired uncle - the legendary Henri Jayer - Emmanuel Rouget has carried the torch by producing some of Burgundy's classiest wine and garnering high critical acclaim. Young Emmanuel was working as a tractor engineer when Uncle Henri offered him a job in his vineyards. In 1985, saturated with the knowledge and passion for winemaking of his Uncle, Emmanuel started his own operation in Flagey.

Under the watchful eye of Jayer, Rouget employed ultra low yields, pre-fermentation cold maceration and 100% new oak. The result has been wines that combine power with elegance, and depth with suppleness. His wines have received rave reviews and are highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors the world over. Of special note is Emmanuel Rouget's Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Cros Parantoux, as only Rouget and Meo-Camuzet produce wine from this appellation. It possesses the class of a Grand Cru and is one of the most celebrated wines in all of Burgundy.
