  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 17

Ripe citrus and pineapple, slightly nutty, concentrated on the mid palate and pure, very good balancing acidity. Good and almost extravagant. (JH)

Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 L'Extravagant de Doisy Daene has 3.9grams of acidity, 192 grams per liter of residual sugar and 12.3% alcohol. The 2005 has a powerful bouquet with honey, mandarin, a touch of petrol and yellow flowers on the nose, later developing that seductive marzipan scent that draws you in like a tractor beam. The palate is unctuous in the mouth that is probably going to be sugar-coated for the next year or two, but there are some gorgeous peach and citrus notes that flourish on the finish. It is more a force of nature than a wine!

  • Chateau Doisy-Daene, a Second Cru Classe in 1855, is located in Barsac in the Sauternes appellation. Doisy-Daene has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924, and for more than eighty years, three generations of family vine growers have exercised their talents to produce the estate's great sweet white wines.

The composition of the soil where Doisy-Daene is grown is a thin layer of clayey sand, known as "Barsac red sand," which sits on top of a chalky subsoil. This soil type is particularly well-suited to the making of elegant and distinguished white wines.

The wine produced is defined by the essence of "noble rot": strength, balance, and subtlety. Doisy-Daene's goal is to produce a style of wine which is a great expression of the calcareous soil on which it is grown and a truly aesthetic family tradition.
