  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

($83) Bright, saturated ruby-red color. Deep aromas of red fruits, flowers, pepper, spices, leather, chocolate and smoke. Suave and thick on entry, then sweet and concentrated in the middle palate, with very good grip to its dark berry flavors. Finishes with some firm oak tannins.

  • Burghound | Rating: 89

A distinctly more elegant nose that blends attractive aromas of red and black pinot fruit with violet and subtle spice notes that merge into rich, sweet and beautifully precise flavors that are chiseled, refined and pure if not as deep as those of the Duresses.

Lafon's 2005 Volnay comes from his 5-10 year old vines (largely from his own selection massale) in the Santenots. Unlike his other 2005s, this finished malo |on time| and was racked to tank at the end of the summer, from which he bottled it the day I visited. Scents of lavender and fresh black cherry lead to a fresh, tight, rather brisk palate with tart fruit skin and bitter black chocolate accents. This boasts refined tannins and lingering spice, even if it lacks a bit of mid-palate weight or richness. And I feel compelled to make allowance for its having come right off the bottling line.

  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 16

This bottling will include lots of young-vine (1999 first vintage) material from Santenots and was racked once at the end of August. Fresh, clean fruit as though cut like a jewel. Super-fresh and still slightly severe.

  • Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
