Lively aromas of white flowers, spices and stone. Tighter than the Rougeot and less obviously dense and rich, but with lovely finesse and a subtle sweetness from oak (50% new).

The second encounter with Coche-Dury's 2005 Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets is just as thrilling as the first. It retains that unmistakable signature |Coche| nose, that slight reduction, here with a lifted popcorn scents, straight out of the microwave. The palate is poised with a killer line of acidity, sophisticated and refined, a gentle crescendo of flavors to the light, spiced finish that is a little more saline than the example 12 months ago. I'll repeat the sentiment from my last note - this is a Meursault from the top drawer.

  • According to Robert Parker, "Jean-Francois Coche-Dury is one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth." Parker' impassioned reverence to this estate in the late '80s brought its appeal worldwide, but neither triple digit scores nor critical acclaim need speak for the insanely low yields and meticulous winemaking that give Domaine Coche-Dury its mystique.

Approximately half of the domaine's nine hectares of vineyards are situated around its hometown of Meursault, and although Coche is best known for Chardonnay, the domaine also bottles six exquisite Pinot Noirs. Famous for the extensive oak treatment and a staggering 22 months in barrel, Coche Dury's finest wines, such as Corton Charlemagne and Meursault Perrieres, have power, concentration, purity, and depth balanced by vibrant acidity for extreme longevity.
