($48; North Berkeley cuvee Medium red. Fresh raspberry and cherry scents are complicated by blood orange, incense and smoked meat. Very spicy on the palate, with deep red berry preserve flavors and a finishing jolt of sweet mocha. Doesn't show the oak influence one might expect from a wine raised completely in barriques; on the contrary, this is flat-out pure and graceful.

Restrained, with serious structure underlying the raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors, this shows alluring perfume and a minerally spine on the back end, which really stretches out the finish. 4,165 cases made.

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition exhibits a dark ruby color (darker than 2006) and a lovely, ripe nose of sweet black cherries, raspberries, pepper, loamy soil, and spice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, relatively soft for a 2005, with light tannin in the finish. It should drink well for 10-15 years. From one of the archconservative bastions of traditionalism in Chateauneuf du Pape, these are classic old-style Chateauneuf du Papes bursting at the seams with sweet cherry notes, roasted Provencal herbs, licorice, and resiny, loamy, earthy scents. These wines age surprisingly well; certainly the 1990 Cuvee du Papet in my cellar is one of the most monumental Chateauneuf du Papes ever made. 2006 looks to be a very good vintage for the Sabon brothers.

A big, burly version of young Rhone that sports a nearly opaque hue to foreshadow its brooding characteristics in the palate. Notions of tar, wild blackberries, spicebox, cocoa and dark cherries encapsulate the image of this wine. Powerful and firmly tannic with a masculine sensibility that is undeniable from the get-go. Flavors of bramble and graphite make a brief appearance as the wine flexes its muscles through the finish. Try again in 2010.

The estate, run by the esteemed Sabon family, can trace its history back to 1547. It includes 25 hectares of Chateauneuf du Pape and parcels in Le Pied de Baud, lieu-dit Monalivet, and les Gallimardes, as well as 15 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Making wine is still a family affair, and three brothers - Jean-Claude, Pierre and Bernard - run the property, with Jean-Claude's son Thierry, the current winemaker, trained in the tradition of the domaine since day one. The wines are a majority Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault completing the blends. Mont-Olivet produces a red and white Chateuneuf du Pape, and a red and white Cotes du Rhone. The "Cuvee du Papet" is only bottled in the most exceptional vintages.
