($50) Deep, bright red. Pungent, highly complex bouquet evokes cherry-cola, blood orange, fresh flowers and minerals; smells like a Burgundy, and an awfully good one at that. Supple red berry preserve flavors are enlivened by juicy minerality and pick up a wild, smoked meat quality on the finish. Very impressive cuvee classique

Sweet, round and opulent. Very seductive though I'd like to see just a tad more refreshment. Very powerful and alcoholic though interesting and vibrant.

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape shows beautifully sweet black cherry and raspberry notes and crushed rock along with some roasted herb and mineral notes. It is dense, elegant, full-bodied, pure, and deep ruby/purple to the rim. This wine should drink well for 12-14 years.

Very dark and juicy, with currant paste, fig, briar and cassis bush notes pushed by a deep, loamy undertow. Finishes with raspberry ganache, graphite and sweet spice hints, while also showing great cut.

Who knew? Quite a bit better than expected. An excellent value right now.

The exceptional quality and stylistic excellence of this property's wines are due to the dedication, versatility, and forward thinking of both the late Jean-Denis Vacheron (who married the owner's daughter, Sylvie Pouzin) and the current winemaker, Bruno Gaspard. Jean-Denis and Sylvie had taken over from her father, Claude, in 1996. However, in 2002, Jean-Denis was killed in a traffic accident and Sylvie took the reins. Today, with the help of Gaspard as well as oenologist Philippe Cambie, she has catapulted the domaine into the elite echelon of the Southern Rhône. Despite holding only nine hectares of land, the domaine boasts venerable neighbors (Château Rayas and Château de Beaucastel), and its vineyards have elements of the best of both these estates. The rocky-sandy soils provide excellent drainage and impart minerality to these Châteauneuf-du-Papes.
