  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

($48) Green-gold. Smoky mango and yellow plum aromas are deepened by a spun sugar quality. Lush, leesy tropical fruit flavors offer good depth and chewy texture, with a light warm character building on the finish. This checks in at 16.4% alcohol but isn't outrageously ripe or loose-knit. And the finish refuses to let up.

Revealing more orange rind, lemon zest, honeyed grapefruit, and restrained minerals in a full-bodied, closer to the vest-style is the 2005 Chardonnay Sea Smoke.

Smooth, creamy, intense and concentrated, with firm citrus, melon, mineral, tangerine and nectarine flavors that ride in on a beam. Ends with a long, full finish.

Bright and sharp but a bit to sweet for my palate. Time may help but the wine is slightly out of balance. Prefer the Mount Carmel Vineyard.

Cut from an entirely different cloth than the 2006 (which I believe is one of the finest Chardonnays I've tasted from California), the ?05 is much more unbridled and upfront w/ an unctuous, heady and lush personality right out of the gates. A full tilt explosion of honeyed fig, vanilla coated apples, poached pears and freshly roasted pistachio nuts (you New York City folks know what I'm talking about, what?s better than the scent of a 'Nuts 4 Nuts? cart in the winter?) gush onto the palate in a full bodied, thick and focused fashion. This vintage is a hedonistic, yet impeccably balanced rendition from the masters at Brewer Clifton.

Brewer-Clifton produces vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills appellation in Santa Barbara. Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton started the winery in the early 1990s with the aim to capture the vineyards' essence in the bottle. The Santa Rita Hills' long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils give the wines great purity and precision. Steve also has his own label called Palmina that focuses on Italian varieties. Greg Brewer also has his own Diatom label and is the winemaker at Melville Winery.
