  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 97

(just three barrels made, from 65-year-old vines) Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose offers blackberry, violet, minerals and smoked meat; combines an almost liqueur-like ripeness with high notes of eucalyptus and menthol. Extremely suave and silky in the mouth, with a fine-grained texture and terrific energy and harmony. At once thick and bright, with powerful extract and superb structure. Perhaps most impressive today on the back half, which features building, palate-staining flavor and a real aromatic whiplash on the end. Tannins are thoroughly buffered by the wine's fruit.

From 65-year-old vines whose 100 cases worth of fruit Dugat didn't de-stem, the 2005 Mazis-Chambertin displays even more intensity, yet also elegance than the Charmes. Aromas of black cherry, purple plum, sassafras, vanilla, and violets usher in a palate of sumptuous richness, intense sweet purity of black fruits with a caramel edge, and layers of raw and roasted meat and chalky, stony minerality. This offers incredible lift and refinement for a wine of such ripeness and sheer density and the finish seems to defy gravity. (Dugat's 2004 Mazis displays amazing intensity, meatiness and grip for its vintage and is worth the proverbial search of the marketplace and a place in one's cellar.)

Nutty, very intriguing indeed. Confident, tightly focussed. Firm, slightly smoky on the nose with an extraordinary weight of fruit undereneath. Wonderful healthy gloss - an impression of polished chestnuts/ Very fine tannins. Refined, vigorous, lots of energy. He thinks the wine is much less rugged than usual.

  • Domaine Dugat-Py is a small family-operated winery in Gevrey-Chambertin that produces a dozen wines ranging from regional to grand cru status. In former days, the Dugat family sold their wines in bulk to local negociants, which currently limits their representation of older vintages. Today, Bernard and Jocelyne Dugat manage the property and have bottled estate fruit since 1989. The domaine's 7.26 hectares of vines are old and produce naturally low yields. There is very little intervention during the vinification process and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Dugat-Py ages its wine in a lofty vaulted cellar, originally built by monks, that dates back to 1075. The wines display a concentrated, lush, old-vine flavor that reflects the quality of such a high class estate.
