($525) Saturated, bright ruby-red. Flamboyantly aromatic, wild nose features blackberry, meat, licorice, minerals, espresso and sexy oak. Like liquid silk on the palate, but with great concentration to the perfumed flavors of dark fruits, game and violet. Wonderfully classy grand cru that finishes with superb length and lift and fine-grained, utterly seamless tannins. Seems a far cry from Dugat's more extractive, chunkier wines of the late '80s and early '90s. This obviously got a very soft bottling, without fining or filtration.

An extremely ripe yet remarkably nuanced and highly complex nose features earthy and spicy fresh red pinot fruit, dried rose petal and violet notes that dissolve into rich, full and sweet broad-scaled flavors possessing serious amounts of dry extract on the palate drenching and hugely long finish imbued with bitter chocolate hints. For such a big wine this is beautifully well-balanced and possesses simply fabulous raw materials. A stunner of a wine that has everything it needs for 30 plus years of life.

Collectively, Bernard Dugat's 2005 grand cru collection -- likely to be bottled in late Spring -- represents a remarkable achievement. From vines of mixed age (one third of them in Mazoyeres), the 2005 Charmes-Chambertin (of which there will be around 175 cases) is remarkable for its polish and creaminess of texture yet at the same time freshness of pure, palate-staining fruit. Red and black currant are wreathed in musky flowers and laced with walnut oil, orange liqueur, ineffable spices, licorice, salt and chalk. The subtlety and mystery of flavors and texture and sheer length on exhibit will leave you shaking your head. (Dugat's 2004 Charmes, incidentally, offered a clarity, palate-staining intensity and ageworthiness that few red Burgundies of that vintage can match.) It should be a twenty-year wine.

This is the cuv‚e containing about a third of MazoyŠres, Gentle tealeaf aromas. Extremely dark and firm. Bold - beefy even - on the nose rather than super charming which is what Charmes typically offers - although on re-tasting after the MazoyŠres this wine seemed much looser and more open. There's a hint of tar and great depth of fruit. An undertow of acidity. Quite 'serious' for a Charmes. This sturdy wine makes your brow knit and demands reflection. He destems all these grapes to give finesse.

  • Domaine Dugat-Py is a small family-operated winery in Gevrey-Chambertin that produces a dozen wines ranging from regional to grand cru status. In former days, the Dugat family sold their wines in bulk to local negociants, which currently limits their representation of older vintages. Today, Bernard and Jocelyne Dugat manage the property and have bottled estate fruit since 1989. The domaine's 7.26 hectares of vines are old and produce naturally low yields. There is very little intervention during the vinification process and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Dugat-Py ages its wine in a lofty vaulted cellar, originally built by monks, that dates back to 1075. The wines display a concentrated, lush, old-vine flavor that reflects the quality of such a high class estate.
