($75; 61% cabernet sauvignon and 39% syrah) Red-ruby. Aromas of black fruits, smoked meat and dark chocolate. Sweet and lush, with mouthfilling flavors of black raspberry, wild spices and game. There's decent ripe acidity here to provide shape. Finishes with a fine dusting of sweet tannins. Another 2005 in a distinctly crowd-pleasing style, with a creamy sweetness but also a firm spine. (Incidentally, there will be only one additional 2005 bottling under the Behrens & Hitchcock label.)

The superb 2005 Ode to Picasso, a 419-case blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Syrah, exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as aromas of blueberries, spring flowers, and forest floor. Offering terrific fruit, a lush, opulent mouthfeel, and a super finish, this hedonistic fruit bomb can be drunk over the next 5-7 years.

Just amazing...sweet tannins frame silky fruit. Will continue to gain complexity

The husband and wife duo of Lisa Drinkward and Les Behrens got their start with their award-winning restaurant, Folie Douce in Arcata, California. When loyal clientele Joe Bob Hitchcock and his wife Lily learned of Les' thoughts of winemaking, the couple decided to put up some capital to join him in his endeavor. The first 175 cases were produced in 1993, and grew to 750 over the next three years. In 1997, the vineyard moved from Arcata to Napa Valley, where Behrens & Hitchcock eventually decided to purchase acreage on Spring Mountain. The team worked hard to produce its first single-vineyard wines during the 1999 harvest. Today the winery is seemingly an overnight success, producing single-lot Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petite Syrah of outstanding quality.
