($95) Ruby-red. Smoky raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by minerals, lavender and rooty sassafras. Suave red and dark berry flavors are complicated and deepened by exotic spicecake and sweet licorice. Impressively integrated tannins add gentle support. Pulls off the trick of outstanding concentration with finesse and finishes with superb precision and length. While still young, this is lovely today.

The 2005 Pagos Viejos is already in bottle but has not been released. It is just slightly more muted but lovely nonetheless. Already complex both aromatically and on the palate, it has superb materials while appearing to be more structured than the 2004. Purchasers will need to be a bit more patient with this 2005 and should consider drinking the 2005 Vinas de Gain in the interim. Kudos to Bodegas Artadi for this tour de force!

Mesquite smokiness on the nose. Overtly mineral with hints of raspberry and blackberry lurking in the background. Too young to be fully appreciated. Tannic structure promises great reward for the patient. Check back in 2018.

Of this esteemed winery, importer Eric Solomon writes: "Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world."

Winemaker Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle turned this former small cooperative into a Tempranillo powerhouse on the solid foundation of his elegant wines. Since the mid-1990s, when de la Calle took control of the property, it has grown to include 75 ha of vineyards in the high altitude, chalky soils of Rioja. French oak complements the mineral-laden fruit in the top cuvees.
