    ($253; 85% tempranillo and 15% graciano) Glass-staining purple. Youthfully backward nose displays inky dark berry and plum aromas, along with licorice, espresso and dark chocolate. Then shockingly fresh and precise on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and blueberry flavors, with powerful tannins adding structure. Coats the palate and reaches every nook and cranny of the mouth, gaining spice and cracked pepper nuances with air. As powerful as this wine is, there's an uncanny weightlessness to it that is intriguing. Finishes clean and long, with lingering spiciness.

    The 2005 Aurus is 85% old-vine Tempranillo and 15% Graciano. It was aged for 24 months in French oak and bottled unfiltered. Purple/black in color, the aromatics seem to have an extra dimension of complexity. Notes of pain grille, pencil lead, crushed stone, blueberry, and blackberry are superb. This leads to a thick, rich, opulent, massive wine with an exceptionally lengthy finish and a decade of aging potential.

    Founded in 1995 (but making wines since 1986) by the brother and sister team of Mercedes and Miguel Angel de Gregorio, this producer hails from Briones in the Rioja Alta region. With a very "poor" terroir of stones and inhospitable soil, this estate crafts wines of great concentration and long maturation potential. Paired with the old vines sourced from 92 different parcels and a state-of-the-art winery, the Angel de Gregorios have the perfect combination of old world raw material and modern winemaking tools.

    The Aurus is a cuvee of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from the oldest vines of the parcels. The Calvario is a single vineyard production that features a majority Tempranillo with small amount of Garnacha and Graciano.
