  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 96

(scheduled to be bottled in December 2008, too) Inky purple. Brooding blackberry and boysenberry aromas are complicated by Asian spices, vanilla and licorice. Broad and sweet, with forceful raspberry and boysenberry flavors, youthful tannic grip and an explosive, palate-staining finish. There's serious weight and concentration here, but admirable vivacity too.

From a cooler year, the 2005 Syrah Seymour's Vineyard exhibits a more European personality than the classically Californian 2004. The 2005 reminds me of a broodingly backward, dark purple-colored Hermitage from the northern Rhone. Aromas of scorched earth, creme de cassis, truffles, and graphite emerge from this cuvee. With remarkable density, structure, precision, and freshness as well as sensational equilibrium (despite its weight and intensity), it should be at its finest between 2012-2025+.

Intense, firm and structured, with spicy white pepper, sage, dried herb, mineral and dusty berry flavors that are compact, focused and full-bodied, ending in a tight, tannic finish.

Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.
