($100; a 60/40 blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc) Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry, violet and licorice aromas, complicated by leather and graphite. Wonderfully sweet, silky and suave, with an inner-mouth aromatic quality rare for the year. This very well-balanced blend is juicy, even a bit youthfully tight, and finishes with impressive perfume. Has the mid-palate sweetness to balance its firm tannic spine and offers a lovely combination of density and elegance. In comparison to this vintage, the 2003 release is more of an |upfront| wine, notes Viader, who pointed out that her flagship wine's cabernet franc element is more important to its aging potential than the sauvignon.

40% Cabernet Franc, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweeter nose than the Benziger. Molten with a strong lava flow undertow - from the Cab Franc? Quite firm and austere but classic. Quite distinctive for a Napa Valley red - much more |minerality|.

Smoke, black cherry and currant aromas are clean. Supple, elegant and balanced, this keeps the fruit at the forefront, ending with mild tannins. Drinks well already. 3,000 cases made.

(14.3% alcohol): Bright red-ruby. Alluring nose offers scents of black raspberry, game, coffee, mocha, leather, graphite and sweet oak, along with a balsamic quality and a floral element, with some dusty brown-spice high notes providing lift. Then plush and seamless in the mouth, very ripe for this bottling, but with enticing floral and mineral lift to the redcurrant and tobacco flavors. Spicy and floral elements contribute to the impression of inner-mouth energy. Still a bit youthfully medicinal on the firmly tannic, very long finish. I suspect the tannins still need a few years to harmonize completely with the wine's fruit. - Stephen Tanzer

Opened up nicely. Good nose and nice finish. Good but not great

VIADER is a leading Napa Valley winery estate established in 1986 by Delia Viader, and recognized for consistently producing high quality red wines. The estate is located 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor just north-east of St. Helena on the steep, rocky slopes of Howell Mountain.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1989, the VIADER Proprietary blend has featured Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant component of Cabernet Franc. The second lable "V" is exclusively Petit Verdot. The estate VIADER Syrah is a blend of Barossa and Hermitage clones. DARE by Viader focuses on single varieties from select vineyards in the Napa Valley blended with their estate fruit. DARE Cabernet Sauvignon features fruit sourced from Lewelling Vineyards in St. Helena. DARE Cabernet Franc uses fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in Oakville. DARE Tempranillo is made from a Ribera del Duero clonal selection sourced from the northeast side of the Napa Valley. VIADER also produces a very limited amount of Cabernet-based dry DARE Rose.
