  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88

($52; 15.5% alcohol) Bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of black- and redcurrant, graphite, leather and nutty, chocolatey oak. Sweet, dense, thick and very ripe, with a slightly porty quality to the currant liqueur and nutty oak flavors and a distinct suggestion of dried fruits. Finishes with building tannins and some heat.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Rich and deeply structured, with blackberry, toasty oak and spice aromas leading to ripe, dense black cherry and mocha notes that take on complexity and focus toward the firm finish.

Unlike the majority of Merlots in the marketplace, Switchback Ridge's 2004 Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard is the real deal. Wonderful scents of chocolate, roasted coffee beans, black cherries, and plums soar from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored offering. Opulent, full-bodied, and chewy with sensational texture and purity, it is a fleshy, succulent Merlot to consume over the next decade.

Thick, juicy, extracted merlot. Notes of dutch chocolate, blackberry and candy apple. Massive amounts of fruit disguise the tannins that lurk beneath. This wine should evolve nicely over the next several years.

Switchback Ridge produces handcrafted estate wines sourced exclusively from the Peterson Family Vineyard in Calistoga. The property has been in the Peterson family since 1914 and encompasses nearly 100 acres located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. For over 75 years the property was primarily maintained as a farm and plum orchard, with vines intermingled amongst the trees. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child. The rich, rocky soils of this beautiful vineyard property consistently produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit, resulting in extremely concentrated, fruit driven wines that are the hallmark of Switchback Ridge. Bob Foley has been the winemaker since the first vintage in 1999.
