($40) Deep ruby-red. Blackberry, spicecake, violet and gunflint on the nose; very syrah. Then juicy, spicy and penetrating, with an enticing sweetness and firm shape to the dark fruit flavors. An impressively fresh, long, gripping wine that really expands and stains the palate on the aftertaste.

The 2004 Syrah Hilltops Estate is an 800-case cuvee fashioned from the winery's finest parcels. Thirty percent of this wine is aged on the lees of Roussanne for eight months to give it a more floral character, resulting in a complex, exotic, full-bodied, dense purple-colored Syrah offering beautiful notes of blackberries, blueberries, cassis, licorice, and pepper. It exhibits a seamless palate, a full-bodied opulence, and wonderful purity as well as length. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.

A good wine, but not as food as the other wines we had there, include SQN b20, Saxum bone rock 2004, Alban Reva 2004, etc.

it was delicious from the start, unlike the recent bottle which takes a while. This reminds me why I liked Stolpman wine in the beginning, fruit forward with good acidity.
