Bold, rich and plush, this is impeccably balanced, with ripe, complex plum, wild berry and smoky mocha-laced oak that's woven into the flavor profile. Focused, deep and persistent. Has a long, complex aftertaste, with a nutmeg scent.

Cedar and heady black cherry dominate the nose. The intense, muscular palate gets a lift from crunchy acidity. Weighty and concentrated, it?s a massive, ripe wine that keeps its balance by dint of its very firm structure and acidity. (LM)

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (only 2,100 cases) exhibits a dense purple color, more obvious tannin, and a more masculine style than the 2003. It's a bigger wine with additional notes of scorched earth, blueberries, blackberries, and heady cassis. Unlike most 2004 Napa Cabernets, this weighty effort will require some bottle aging.

One of five CA Cabernets that we opened with friends: 04 Araujo Eisele, 04 Staglin, 04 Realm To-Kalon, 03 Shafer Hillside Select, and 02 Merus. All were outstanding (95-96) except for the Realm which was unfortunately flawed. The Shafer and Staglin were the smoothest and most mature, with the Shafer the bigger of the two. The Araujo and Merus were a little younger and brighter. The Araujo is probably the best candidate for improving a little with age.

Wow! This wine sizzles on the tongue. A beautiful Deep dark purple, and a long persistent finish!

Situated at the base of the Mayacamas Range on the Rutherford Bench, this sixty-one acre property has ideal soils, microclimate and location. The estate's potential was recognized by some of the first Napa Valley settlers and was planted to vineyards in the mid 1860's. Today the certified organic estate is home to the Staglins, fifty-one acres of vines, an underground winery, the historic homestead and a solar array.

Staglin is undoubtedly within the top tier of California Cabernet producers. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label.
