($50) Good medium red. Superripe aromas of candied raspberry, plum, spices and flowers. Fat, spicy and sweet, with a deep core of rich red fruits. Finishes with sweet tannins and excellent length.

Like both its stable mates, this is quite stylish with moderate oak framing very ripe and spicy dark berry fruit notes with ample violet nuances that leads to rich and somewhat fresher middle weight flavors that are finer and underpinned by finer and more sophisticated tannins as well though they sacrifice the muscle and power of the Botella in the bargain. This coats the mouth with ample dry extract and the finishing balance is the best of the three and the only nit here is a touch of warmth. Otherwise, this is stylish, balanced, complex and the class of the cellar.

The 2004 Pinot Noir Southing, which takes its name from a south-facing hillside vineyard, is a packed and stacked effort with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a restrained, but promising nose of black currants, cherries, and raspberries with forest floor/earthy undertones. This is a full-bodied, powerful Pinot revealing striking elegance, purity, and seamlessness. Although young and unevolved, it is well-balanced, and should drink well for 7-10 years.

Tremendous richness, depth and concentration, with a gush of blueberry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that offers intensity, lively acidity and enough tannins to merit short-term cellaring. 2,400 cases made.

One year after my last comment (9/25) and this baby is still going strong, beautiful Burgundy and ruby colors, earthy and some spice aromas, mulled cherries and plums, delicious! Flavors still resound cherry, a touch of spice, pomegranate reduction...silky smooth entry and finish, not weight, not overly done, just right. This is in a window right now where a Burgundy fan would find a lot to like. Has another 3 years easy, adding 2 to my last assessment.

Showing some age but, still delightful. Mild cherry/cedar nose with soft tannins and fruit beginning to diminish. Lingering finish.

This wine is drinking great! I don't think it will get better, yet, probably good for another year at least. Very balanced, and only after 1 hour after opening the bottle, it was excellent and ready for prime time.

For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard.

Sea Smoke produces Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of their estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across the hillsides, slowing the ripening process and providing the extended maturation period essential to the development of top-quality Pinot Noir.
