($36) Ruby-red. Strong blackberry and cassis aromas are complicated by suggestions of graphite, iron and floral oils; this smells like Cote-Rotie. Focused and impressively energetic, with bright red and dark berry flavors, firm tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. According to Barruol, this is from petite serine.Author: Josh RaynoldsIssue: January/February 2007Wine Spectator | Rating: 91
Shows the elegant fruit and floral notes of the vintage, with extra oomph from mocha- and tobacco-tinged toast. Nice plush, dark fruit on the minerally finish. Very solid for a 2004. 300 cases imported.Drink Dates: 2006-2012Author: James MolesworthWine Advocate | Rating: 88
The 2004 St.-Joseph exhibits smoky raspberry and red currant characteristics, a crisper, higher acid profile than the 2003, and an elegant, medium-bodied style. It should drink well for 7-10 years.Drink Dates: 2006-2016Author: Robert Parker
Located in the very heart of Gigondas, this property has been in the family for 500 years, with ancient stone cellars that haven't changes much since they were hewn out of the rock. The wines are made by Louis Barroul, a fanatical and uncompromising individual who extracts from the land the true essence of the grape and is driven to make nothing but top-notch wines. Louis is a hands-on type of winemaker, and even with the grapes he contracts for, he personally oversees the thinning, pruning, ripening and harvesting. This dedication and surveillance pays off in spades in the end with wines that are focused and concentrated without being flabby. They showcase an array of balanced fruit, spice and earth flavors.
