  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($50) Ruby-red. Very complex aromas of smoked meat and lavender-accented red fruits. Sweet, concentrated raspberry and strawberry flavors are lifted by an exotic floral pastille quality. A strikingly elegant, silky wine that finishes with fine-grained tannins and excellent persistence.

Mid crimson. Big round and bloody ? more of a big fruity wine than a Gigondas specifically. Some oak. Flattering but more because of the lightly smoked oak than the fruit, I fear. Nice lift though. Very nice wine but without a particularly strong Gigondas imprint.

Pure and driven, with plum sauce, currant and fig paste notes backed by hints of tobacco, spice and mineral. Long, structured finish.

The 2004 Gigondas Valbelle is a big, rich, blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. This wine has a sweet nose of licorice, tar, peppery roasted meats, blackberries, and cherries. It is smoky, rich, and impressively endowed.

  • Located in the very heart of Gigondas, this property has been in the family for 500 years, with ancient stone cellars that haven't changes much since they were hewn out of the rock. The wines are made by Louis Barroul, a fanatical and uncompromising individual who extracts from the land the true essence of the grape and is driven to make nothing but top-notch wines. Louis is a hands-on type of winemaker, and even with the grapes he contracts for, he personally oversees the thinning, pruning, ripening and harvesting. This dedication and surveillance pays off in spades in the end with wines that are focused and concentrated without being flabby. They showcase an array of balanced fruit, spice and earth flavors.
