($66) Deep ruby. Lush raspberry and cherry preserves on the nose, with hints of candied plum, espresso, flowers and dark chocolate. An impressively rich Chateauneuf, with powerful dark fruit flavors perked up by refreshing mineral lift on the back and nicely supported by supple tannins. Rich and chewy on the finish, with lingering notes of smoke, meat and cherry liqueur. Serious stuff, and in need of cellaring.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige is a fabulous blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that was brought up all in foudre. A classic Chateauneuf du Pape, with garrigue, leather, underbrush and gorgeous Grenache-driven fruit all front and center, it is medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and has good acidity and fine tannin that show on the finish. Drinking nicely, it should continue to evolve for another 4-6 years easily.

Very supple, with pure, Burgundy-like notes of red and black cherry, raspberry and incense, followed by a long, supersilky finish that lets the fruit, mineral and garrigue notes play out beautifully. Subtle now. Should put on weight in the cellar.

The outstanding 2004 Cuv‚e Prestige, as always, has gamey, kirsch liqueur notes, a dark plum/garnet color, full body, loads of flavor, and plenty of spice, herbs, new saddle leather, and meaty notes. It is rich, heady, and best drunk in its first 10-15 years of life. \nROBERT PARKER

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape, and it is one of the oldest documented landholders in the region. Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today - Jean-Jacques, Denis, and Gilbert. Since 2001, Didier Negron, son-in- law of Jean Jacques, has been the winemaker. Denis and his son Julien take care of the vineyards, and Delphine, daughter of Denis, runs the winery office. Today the domaine owns 15 ha. in Chateauneuf du Pape and 17 ha. in Roquemaure from which they produce Lirac and Cotes du Rhone.
