  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($250; bottled in August of 2007) Good saturated full red. Lovely perfumed nose offers redcurrant and rose petal. Dense, sweet and nicely delineated, offering lovely energy without any impression of weight. This has a floral character I don't find in the estate's 2003s. Finishes long and impressively pure, with firm but fine tannins and vibrant fruits and flowers. Structured to evolve slowly in bottle.

Aromas of blackberry, licorice and tar. Intense and full-bodied, with a wonderful concentration of fruit, supersilky tannins and a complex finish of pure fruit and Indian spices. Superb for the vintage.

The 2004 Barolo La Serra reveals a generous personality in its dark red fruit with notable depth and richness that carries through to the persistent, sweet finish. With air, floral notes develop to round out this particularly multi-dimensional, full-bodied and beautiful La Serra. 2004 is a great vintage for this wine, which can sometimes be austere.

  • For years considered an oddity in Piedmont, Roberto Voerzio has proven to the naysayers and detractors that his techniques, a consummate melding of old and new elevage methods, do work and produce wines of unquestionable concentration and harmonious balance. He is almost fanatical in his insistence upon extraordinarily low yields; high density plantings and 2-4 clusters of grapes per vine are the norm. The cellar regimen is tailored to each vineyard's production, not over-regulating fermentations and employing a precise melange of new and used oak to achieve the overall "perfect" package. The wines are deceptive in that they are luscious and approachable, replete with ripe fruit and floral notes, but a hidden spine of structure and massive underlying tannins create an absolutely stunning Nebbiolo experience. These are rare wines that consistently rank among the best the Piedmont offers, and Voerzio is a true Nebbiolo legend.
