  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($80) Good deep ruby-red. Complex nose combines red cherry, smoke, meat, tobacco, leather and graphite. Less dense than the Napa Valley bottling but more vibrant, with a slightly lower pH. Offers a nice combination of sweetness and energy. Finishes energetic, sappy and long, with firm tannins and a juicy quality. In contrast to the Napa Valley example, there are just 1,000 cases of this, and it's essentially from one vineyard.

Beautifully crafted, rich, chewy and concentrated, yet with a wonderful lift to the flavors. Refreshing, vibrant and supple-textured, with layers of anise, currant, sage and mineral that unfold gracefully, ending with a long finish that has just the right mix of ripe fruit and tannins.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap shows elegant bay leaf, red berry, and red currant notes, a dark ruby color, and hints of earth, lead pencil and spice. The wine is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot. It is a stylish, more finesse-styled Cabernet Sauvignon to drink during its first 10-15 years of life.

  • Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.
