($45; 15.2% alcohol) Ruby-red. Pure but tight aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, minerals and graphite. Sweet, dense and rich, with enticing flavors of dark berries, licorice and chocolatey oak. This and the Stags Leap bottling are aged in 50% to 75% new oak, while the Napa release gets just 25%. This struck me as a sweeter, longer, more concentrated version of the Napa Valley release.

A classy wine that's rich and intense, with a concentrated mix of mineral, currant, blackberry, dusty herb and cedary oak flavors. Though deep and well-structured, this maintains a sense of elegance and grace, making it a good choice for near- and mid-term cellaring.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) has a dark ruby/purple-tinged color, and a crisp elegant style with cedar, spice box, black currant, and Chinese black tea. It is medium-bodied, rather tightly knit, and slightly austere, but with a satisfying finish.

A solid Cabernet with lots of deep red fruit (black cherry, blackberry) upfront and cedar notes on the finish.

Drunk at work on 31st. Very solid - better after 1st hour. Only decanted 15 minutes - should have waited. Very Solid.

Exceeded expectations. Cassis, a little plum, strong and long cedar notes. Nose was quite interesting. More complex on day 2 adding some spice, and a little menthol.

The past two weekends our travel youth hockey team played in 6 games in two cities. The parents consummed many wines partially from my cellar. A quick rundown: Phelps Napa 05 - Nice wine with aa touch of vanilla, color, body intact. The 06 was slightly better. The 06 Merlot similar wine with less complexity. The Mondavi Napa 08 Cab is drinking really well - Soft, complex flavors perfect color and body. The Mondavi Oakville's (04 and 06) were VERY dry, more oak and less fruit. Still a good wine, color and body were in good shape. The 689 was very nice, different in flavor profile then the others - color was perfect the body was slightly lighter.

We had this as part of a Cabernet Sauvignon tasting on 10/3/09. It had a very nice bouquet of sweet cassis, chocolate, cherry and mineral aromas. The palate was very smooth but lacked enough verve. It followed the nose exactly and was quite tasty.

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.
