($35) Bright medium ruby. Cassis, blackberry, violet and licorice on the nose. Juicy and precise if a bit lean, with penetrating flavors of blackberry and licorice framed by bright acids. Finishes with firm-edged tannins.

A remarkably complex and enticing Charbono that actually tastes great. Rich, full-bodied yet lean and tightly focused, this exhibits a complex array of new leather, mineral and tart wild berry flavors that turn smooth and polished on the palate. Very impressive.

The talented Bob Foley turns out one of the two finest Charbonos in California. (Turley Cellars produces the other). Deep ruby/purple with notes of earth, mocha., black cherry, and spice, Foley's 2004 Charbono is full-bodied, chewy, slightly rustic, but tasty.

Full bodied, very dark ruby wine with lots of black cherry showing through. The tannins are a bit rough, drinking like a mountain AV type of wine. Nice finish.

Winemaker Robert Foley began his winemaking career in 1977, working at Heitz Winery before becoming founding winemaker at Markham, where he developed the style of Merlot that helped make the variety a mega-trend in the 1980s. Following his success at Markham, Foley is perhaps best known for his tenure with Pride and Paloma. He still keeps a coterie of clients including School House, Switchback Ridge and Hourglass. He founded Robert Foley Vineyards in 1999 and was named Food & Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2007.
