‹?? Neal Martin Issue Date 29th Apr 2014 Source 212, The Wine Advocate The 2004 Rieussec has a very composed and generous bouquet with intense dried honey, quince and smoky notes that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is ripe and sensual on the entry, the oak present but very well-integrated. There is good depth here, with touches of white pepper sprinkled over the harmonious finish. This is a very competent Rieussec that feels long and satisfying, although it does not possess the personality of say, de Fargues of Raymond-Lafon. This is a decent, workmanlike Rieussec.

Coppery gold. Quite volatile nose. Underneath there are some rather odd flavours. A bit loose and lots of acidity and alcohol. Not quite enough tightness to hold it together. Some suggestion of smoked meats. Interesting. May all come together eventually but for the moment it all looks a bit simple.

Fruity, with lemon, apricot and lilac on the nose. Full-bodied, with a lovely intensity and bright acidity. Long and elegant. The palate builds on the finish. Not the 2001 (Wine of the Year), but very good indeed.

A bit medicinal and still too early to fully appreciate.

Good but missing some of the petrol. Think the 03 might be better.

still pale and youthful, excellent balance and length but needs more time for complexity.

Chateau Rieussec is one of the few producers of Sauternes who approaches Chateau d'Yquem in terms of quality and consistency. The vineyards of the two chateaux are actually located alongside one another in the communes of Sauternes and Barsac. Chateau Rieussec is one of 11 Premier Cru properties designated in the 1855 classification, and was originally owned by Carmelite monks pre-dating the French Revolution. Since then, ownership has passed through many hands, and the property was eventually sold to the Lafite-Rothschild group in 1984. Under the management of Charles Chevallier, the chateau has seen vast improvement, and is frequently cited amongst the best Sauternes in the world. Tremendously elegant, these wines are typically made from a combination of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

The estate produces a second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, and a third called Clos Labere, which undergoes shorter ageing in barrels and therefore may be consumed at a younger age than the grand vin. Finally, the estate makes a dry white called "R" de Rieussec, composed from many of same grapevines that produce their Sauternes.
